Subliminal Sessions, Pacha, Ibiza 2012

Erick Morillo holds the longest ever residency at Pacha Ibiza, now going into his 12th amazing year! His Subliminal Sessions parties have gone from strength to strength, with the last two seasons being the most highly attended, at the most VIP club on the island. As well as upfront fresh music that you will not hear anywhere else, there’s a proper party crowd in tow, and a list of VIPs as long as your arm, you just never know who you’re going to bump into you, from Diddy, Axwell, Tiesto, Paris Hilton the list goes on.

This season sees the return of Swedish House Mafia’s Steve Angello. The last time he played was the opening of the 2010 season, and rocked Pacha to it’s very foundations with an all night back to back set with Erick himself. Also, this year sees a residency with Mr. Dirty Dutch, Chuckie. After an amazing couple of years rocking all over the world, Chuckie will make many appearances at Subliminal Sessions this year, along with SYMPHO NYMPHO, the new super group of Erick Morillo, Harry ‘Choo Choo’ Romero and Jose Nunez, and also spinning will be Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano from Amsterdam. Other guests include AN21, Carl Kennedy, Dirty South, Max Vangeli, Norman Doray, Sneaky Sound System and Shawnee Taylor.

The theme for this season’s parties, really is out of this world. “When you’ve been out burning the candle at both ends the world becomes a little blurry, your senses are heightened and everything is not exactly as it seems. This is the feeling that has inspired the ‘Beautiful Reality’ theme this season. The venue will be transformed into a surrealist wonderland, with stairways and doors leading to erotic fantasies of the unconscious mind.” – Erick Morillo.

Hi Carl, where are you now and how are you?

I’m just about to leave Sydney, was here to play the brand new Marquee night/dayclub and heading back to New York City. I am very well thank you.

Your recent release Once Upon A Time has proven to be a dance floor hit, you’ve been described to have a 6th sense when it comes to great tunes, what’s your creative process?

Once Upon A Time is growing nicely and getting huge support from the likes of Tiesto, Pete Tong, Calvin Harris and Erick Morillo so I’m happy about that. A sixth sense, hmm I guess it’s that feeling you get when you hear a record you just know it is massive or has the potential to be massive. Music is an individual taste and opinion.

How did the collaboration with Cheyenne come about an what was it like to work with her?

Cheyenne is a top model in Australia so she’s pretty well known. I’ve been friends with her and her family for quite a while, Sydney is like a village so most people know most people. Cheyenne also lives in New York City now and she played me some of her ideas, one happened to be the lyrics to what is now Once Upon A Time. We laid the beat down the next day and she recorded the vocals in 20 minutes and that was that. Cheyenne’s solo work is something to look forward to in the future. Since most Aussie chicks are brought up like blokes, Chey is a lot of fun to hang out with.

You also had the music video done for the track, what is the idea behind it?

Well it’s only my 2nd music video so I’m very open to let the director pitch his ideas. All I wanted was for it to be shot in NYC, it ends up with me being a male gigolo but you don’t know it until the very end and Cheyenne is the madam. A little bit different I suppose.

You played at Subliminal’s recent Miami party at Amnesia, how was it?

Like all Subliminal parties it was amazing, lots of fun, great energy and did I mention fun? WMC was my favourite to date. EDM in USA is going through the roof thank God. Also Amnesia is one the best clubs out there.

What was the highlight of the night?

The Subliminal party was great with the best lineup. It was nice to play on the same bill with one of Danny Tenaglia’s last sets before he retired, that’s historic.

You are known to live around the world, Australia, USA and other places. Where do you feel most at home? How does the house/dance crowd differ in different countries in your opinion?

For me, home is NYC now but when I’m in Ibiza I feel at home, when I’m in England I feel at home and when I’m in Sydney I feel at home so that’s a hard question. I come from an Irish/English circus background so traveling is in my blood, I will always be moving around but as of right now NYC is my home. The scene is changing all the time around the world. Right now Australia is virtually non-exsisting on the club scene but has amazing festivals and USA is just setting new bench marks with clubs and festivals. On the whole people love music all over the globe so the world loves dance one way or another.

What’s your most memorable DJ moment so far?

I don’t really have one that stands out on it’s own. I’m lucky to I play at the best clubs and with the best DJs out there. I think one that stands out is playing with The Swedish House Mafia after their groundbreaking Madison Square Garden show in NYC. That was epic beyond belief so I was happy to be part of it.

The summer is just around the corner, what are your plans?

My plans are to release the follow up to Once Upon A Time called Lost In Rio featuring Joel Edwards under my own label called Wasted Youth and to play Subliminal Pacha and Europe mainly. I’m really going to start pushing the brand of Wasted Youth and I have just signed an exciting young producer from Sweden called Oskar so I will be releasing him into the world this summer as well. So a lot of work ahead and a lot of fun.

What’s your prediction for this summer’s chart topper?

Good question and who knows. There’s a lot of good music out there and it’s a great time to be making dance music. I’m just hoping my new releases do well with Lost In Rio out June 12th and the 3rd release with Nick Galea and Joel Edwards called Out of My Mind which I think will be a moster going into August.

You’ve mixed the latest Subliminal compilation coming out in May, what kind of vibe can we expect from it?

A little bit different to what I would normally play, a bit more of the new stuff from SYMPHO NYMPHO which is all just banging. A lot of energy, a lot of pumping and definitely 4th gear all the way.

How did you choose the track list for the compliation?

I had Subliminal and Strictly Rhythm send me all the new stuff that was up for contention and I spent about a week going through all the tunes whilst I was running around Central Park and flying to gigs. Then I just got it down to the final 14 and mixed it. You kind of see the mix in your head eventually so that’s how I did this one.

Who would you say are the future big names in the house music scene? Do you have any particular DJ favourites at the moment?

I think the whole scene is strong and there’s a lot of support between the DJs and for the young guys they really have to step up which is the way it should be. The Other Guys from Sydney I think will be a name to keep an eye on, The Authors again from Sydney but who are based in Germany now, Oskar from Sweden and my kid brother Jack Kennedy. It won’t be long before he releases his own productions. When you’re hungry enough, that’s a dangerous fuel.

What’s your favourite classic track?

You Don’t Know Me by Armand Van Helden.

Finally, what’s next in the pipeline?

To build Wasted Youth as a major player. Release originals and keep building my profile. Help kids with a charity in Brooklyn Bronx. Land on the moon.

Wow! What an amazing week of parties at Miami Winter Music Conference 2012. It all started with the Subliminal Records showcase at Amnesia nightclub. There was a massive line up including Carl Kennedy, Sneaky Sound System, SYMPHO NYMPHO, Norman Doray, Erick Morillo, Harry Choo Choo Romero, Jose Nunez, Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano, Shawnee Taylor, Segarra plus special guests Chuckie and legend Danny Tenaglia to bring the night to a close. How many artists can you fit in one event? A truly awesome pool of talent.  Carl Kennedy warms the arriving crowd, followed by a great performance from Sneaky Sound System with live vocals, then Norman Doray is the first to pump the big tunes out as the club gets to near capacity. Sunnery & Ryan spin after Norman and the club is now jammed packed ready for the headline acts. New act SYMPHO NYMPHO, comprised of Erick Morillo, Harry Romero & Jose Nunez play together for the very first time, dropping a lot of big tunes from their new album SYMPHO NYMPHO – The Beginning. Seeing the three of them behind the decks together really was a great sight, and the sound kept the dance floor rocking. Shawnee Taylor and Segarra both performed amazing live vocals on the new stage in Miami’s premier super club. Erick and Chuckie both played slamming solo set’s before going back to back at LIV later in the week (more on that later.) New York city legend Danny Tenaglia closed the night with groovy classic 90′s NY house the only way Danny Tenaglia could. He even had a hand in hand dance in the booth with Erick’s tour manager Manny Zelaya. It was a great party in a club that has an amazing lighting system and incredible sound system to match.

Ultra Music Festival – 24th March

Erick Morillo is like a resident at Ultra festival, playing there for a decade or more, from it’s humble beginning to it now being a global super power with festivals all over the globe from Europe to Brazil and more. Subliminal TV was at Erick’s house before the gig to get interviews with SYMPHO NYMPHO, Shawnee Taylor & Segarra. It was the sunniest day of the week so far with the gorgeous blazing rays spreading all over Miami Beach. Wyclef Jean also calls in to Erick’s house to go over the plans for the festivals party. After an hour the convoy of cars leaves Erick’s and heads over the water to downtown Miami, for what promises to be an afternoon full of intense energy. After arriving at the festival Erick makes his way to the stage and gets announced by the MC. The crowd goes crazy when Erick appears and he drops the SYMPHO NYMPHO mix of his new track Elephant with Alexandra Burke. Shawnee Taylor and Segarra again perform new tracks Colors and Beautiful Reality, respectively. However, Wyclef Jean of the Fugees has to take the crown for best act of the day, if not just for his stage presence and antics. He really got the crowd going with his energy and climbed the actual stage rigging so he was fifty feet above the ground singing on the mic, a real heart in mouth moment for some people. He then climbs down, jumps off the stage and joins the madness with the crowd, which is totally exhilarating. Erick finishes the set with some big records like Deniz Koyu’s Tung. Erick thanks the crowd in English and Spanish and leaves to rapturous applause.

LIV Nightclub – 24th March

To end a trio of amazing parties, it’s Erick’s very own birthday party at LIV. Special guests tonight are Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano and Chuckie. They do a solid job of keeping the crowd warm, ready for Erick to arrive. Sunnery and Ryan drop their Tribeca track which was released on Subliminal Records last year and still doing great things. Erick arrives and the party really gets started. What a packed night! Robots, birthday cake, Shawnee, Segarra and new talent Nate Walker, however, Wyclef seems to have stolen the show yet again. Not only does he get the crowd vibed up with his master MC skills but he also leaps up and does a hand walk on the small ledge in front of the decks! Did this guy used to be in the Olympic team or something? His acrobatic prowess certainly commands respect and adds to the spectacle of the night. P.Diddy looks on from his private table on the balcony and the clubbers are loving the party vibes. After rocking on till 7am last year, the authorities get tough and end bang on 5am, with the dance floor still packed but satisfied. And for those who wanted more and in the know they headed over to Diddy’s house for a marathon after party.

Erick Morillo, Subliminal Records, SYMPHO NYMPHO and all the crew totally rocked Miami WMC 2012 and now set the stage for a super exciting year with Ibiza, New York, Vegas and many many more parties all over the world.
